Who runs Nikkit, what the blog covers, how articles are researched and checked, and how to reach the people who write them.
Nikkit is a blog, and the line under the logo, Smart home, explained simply, is the whole editorial brief. New articles go up when they are ready, and everything we have published stays available in the blog archive.
Most of what is written about smart home technology is written by people who have never had to live with the results. Nikkit is the opposite arrangement, and that is the whole idea behind it.
We write from notes taken while doing the thing, not from a summary of other summaries. Where we are unsure, the page says so in plain words.
We keep the commercial side visible. Some outbound links earn us money, and that never buys a change to the text around them.
How claims get checked and how money is disclosed is written down separately, on the editorial policy page.
Articles are filed under one topic each, so an archive page reads as a list rather than a pile. Most of the traffic here lands on smart lighting, plugs and switches and home security.
Every article carries the name of the person who wrote it, and every name links to a page listing everything else they have written.
Milo Fenwick, Smart home reviewer and early adopter. Milo buys new smart home devices the week they launch and keeps an unglamorous spreadsheet of exactly which ones have failed him and how long they lasted. He writes about gear the way he would warn a friend before they buy it.
Ada Kessler, Home security and privacy writer. Ada installed physical security systems professionally for six years before switching to writing about the smart version of the same job. She reads a device's privacy policy before she reads its feature list.
Jonah Pryce, Automation and integration writer. Jonah builds home automations far more complicated than any household actually needs, purely for the challenge, then writes the stripped down version that works for everyone else without the troubleshooting headaches.
People ask about the name. There is rarely a good story behind a domain, and there is not one here either. Nikkit was available, it was short enough to say out loud, and it has been the name long enough now that changing it would be more confusing than keeping it.
What we do not do is predict outcomes. Nothing about smart home technology works that way, and pages that pretend otherwise are selling something.
