The three that survived that entire period, and that I still rely on daily years later, taught me more about what actually makes automation useful than the other twenty combined.

Automation for its own sake creates fragile complexity. Automation solving a genuine recurring annoyance creates something you actually depend on, and those two things look identical when you are first setting them up.

Why more automations usually means a less reliable house

Every automation is a small piece of software depending on a device staying online, a trigger firing correctly, and a condition evaluating as expected, and each additional automation adds another point where something can quietly break without an obvious symptom pointing back to the cause. A house with three solid automations that always work beats a house with twenty automations where a third of them have silently stopped functioning and nobody has noticed.

This is the opposite of the smart home marketing message, which implies more automation equals more value, when in practice the reliability of a small number of automations matters far more to daily life than the sheer quantity running in the background.

The lights that turn off automatically, the first one worth building

An automation that turns off lights in unoccupied rooms after a set period of no detected motion solves a genuine, frequent annoyance, forgotten lights burning electricity in an empty room, without requiring any behavior change from anyone in the house. It works silently in the background and only becomes noticeable when it fails, which is exactly the profile of a good automation.

The nightly lock check, the second one worth building

An automation that checks smart lock status at a set time each night and sends a notification if any door is unlocked solves the specific, recurring anxiety of lying in bed wondering whether you actually locked the door, without requiring you to get up and check manually. This is a case where automation genuinely improves peace of mind rather than just adding convenience, and it is simple enough that it rarely breaks.

I added this one almost as an afterthought and it has become the automation I would keep if forced to give up every other one, purely because of how directly it solves a specific, recurring worry rather than a vague convenience.

The morning routine, the third one worth building

A single trigger, a specific time or a first motion detected in the kitchen, that adjusts thermostat, turns on specific lights, and starts a coffee maker if you have a smart one, replaces several individual morning actions with one automatic sequence. This is the automation most people picture when they imagine a smart home, and it genuinely delivers on that promise because it solves a truly daily, repetitive task rather than an occasional one.

Keep this one simple initially, two or three actions at most, and resist the urge to make it more elaborate until the basic version has proven reliable over several weeks of actual use.

What to do before adding a fourth automation

Live with these three for at least a month before adding anything else, and pay attention to whether any of them fail silently during that period, since a fourth automation added on top of an already shaky foundation compounds reliability problems rather than adding proportional value. Each new automation should solve a problem you have actually noticed yourself manually doing repeatedly, not a hypothetical convenience imagined during a late night browsing session.

Why these three specifically survived while others did not

Looking back at the twenty automations I eventually disabled, the pattern was consistent: they depended on multiple devices working together in sequence, they solved a convenience rather than a genuine recurring frustration, or they required a specific condition, a particular time combined with a particular sensor state, that rarely actually occurred in real life the way I had imagined when building it. The three that survived each depend on a single trigger and a small number of actions, which is precisely what makes them both useful and reliable.

This is a useful filter to apply to any new automation idea before building it: does it depend on a long chain of conditions, and does it solve something you have personally been annoyed by more than once. If either answer gives you pause, it is probably not one of the automations worth prioritizing early.

Testing an automation properly before trusting it

Run any new automation manually several times across different conditions, different times of day, different states of the house, before assuming it works reliably enough to depend on without checking. An automation that works perfectly during a controlled test but has never been tried during an actual busy morning with the whole household moving around can still surprise you the first time it matters.
